Hoar Construction’s Retail / Mixed Use Division was born when the company successfully completed Eastwood Mall in Birmingham in 1959. At the time, no one suspected what a huge impact the southeast’s first enclosed mall would have on the company. Soon retail and mixed use construction became the focus of the company’s capabilities. Our clients were pleased with their experiences with Hoar, and as the shopping center industry expanded, so did the company. From that initial project, Hoar has grown to be one of the largest retail contractors in the country building more than 90 million square feet of enclosed malls, shopping centers, power centers, anchor stores, and lifestyle centers in more than 30 states. Retail / Mixed Use is still one of the company’s leading markets. And in all those projects, in all those locations, through hurricanes and snowstorms, Hoar Construction has never missed an opening date.

Commercial construction has been a mainstay for Hoar since 1940 when the newly formed company started building churches. It was this type of construction that saw the company through those difficult times during the war years. As program manager, Hoar acts as the representative and agent of the Owner, typically managing a group of ongoing interdependent projects. Concrete construction is complex. You must lay out the formwork, place and tie rebar, develop the right concrete mixture, schedule the transport of the mix to meet the needs at the site, and finally, place and finish the concrete. Then you still must cure, test, and inspect. Building large concrete structures requires a team of individuals who are knowledgeable in more than construction techniques. Hoar Construction has a team skilled in both reinforced and post-tensioned concrete construction. They understand the chemistry, physics and thermal calculations, the weather and temperature considerations, and the testing protocols involved. Hoar’s concrete division is staffed with superintendents and crews who have years of experience building large, complicated concrete structures.
