Shelby Center for Engineering Technology
Auburn University
The Shelby Center for Engineering Technology is the new home of Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. It houses administrative, classroom, and research space and has a 165 seat lecture hall. The 3-story, 184,000 square foot facility consists of a central pavilion flanked by two L-shaped buildings connected by enclosed and open-air elevated walkways. Its federal style architecture incorporates rich limestone and brick with precast concrete accents. An open air arcade with groin-vaulted ceilings is located at the south elevation of the L-shaped buildings. The grand foyer in the central pavilion is stunning with floors and staircases of epoxy terrazzo and walls of limestone, granite, and book-matched cherry wood panels. Laboratories are finished with wood casework, static dissipative tile to facilitate electrical experiments, and everything necessary for graduate level research. Classrooms have rear projection display systems, wireless connectivity, and fully automated lighting and sound controls. Hoar served as Construction Manager overseeing multiple prime contractors administering the design and preconstruction phases, the bid process and construction through to occupancy.
