North Pavilion Hospital Concrete Frame

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

UAB North Pavilion is a fourteen story, 885,000 square foot hospital. In addition to the deep foundations and structural frame, Hoar Construction was responsible for constructing a one story, a two story, and a six story bridge crossing busy downtown streets and connecting the hospital to other UAB facilities. Coordination, logistics, staging, traffic control and safety required significant planning and controls. Placing the drilled pier foundations required blasting operations which were very carefully timed and coordinated to eliminate damage to the calibrations of the linear accelerator in the adjacent cancer center. The project was fast tracked, and Hoar Construction worked closely with the project team to coordinate sleeves, embeds, recesses, and slab blockouts which constantly changed, sometimes just a few hours prior to slab pours. Hoar developed production maps for scheduling activities and used web cameras to help control and maintain these schedules.
