Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Facility

Hoar self performed nearly 190,000 man hours on the Shelby Biomedical project, the majority of which was on the construction of the 12-story cast-in-place concrete structure. The magnitude of self performing this work coupled with the hazard exposure associated with a multi story concrete frame elevated even Hoar’s constant focus on safety. We identified our crafts people as a vital key to a safe project and implemented a progressive safety incentive program tailored specifically for this project. Each concrete foremen was presented the opportunity for a monetary incentive based on a safety performance measured through specific milestone achievements. Successful completion, for the purposes of this program, was defined by safe performance, elimination of all hazards, and loss control for each milestone period. This “pilot” safety incentive program was an overwhelming success and resulted in ZERO lost time accidents and the maximum payout to each of the participants.
