Shelby Center for Engineering Technology

The Shelby Center for Engineering Technology at Auburn University is the new home of the College of Engineering. The 4-story, 185,000 square foot facility houses the dean’s office, administrative offices, departmental offices, laboratories, classrooms, and a 165 seat lecture hall. The facility is a concrete structure resting on over 150 deep footing concrete piers. The exterior skin is composed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, pre-cast concrete banding, brick pilasters, and GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) cornice. The central pavilion and arcades have limestone walls and columns. The ceilings of the arcades are groin vaults constructed of GFRC. Floors and staircases in the grand foyer are epoxy terrazzo. Walls are constructed with limestone, granite, and book-matched cherry wood panels. The arched ceiling is finished to give it the appearance of hammered copper. Laboratories are finished with wood casework and everything necessary for graduate level research. The building controls system fully integrates the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting control systems which can be monitored and managed by University staff from a remote location. Fully automated electronic access control preserves public access during the day and security after-hours.
